Hi, I'm Amy with Iluma Learning and I have shared through LinkedIn a little bit about a program that we've started called Spark. And it's a leadership program for first time leaders, never trained, never formally trained leaders. And so we come together monthly, online. It's a six month commitment and it's a rotating commitment. You can join at any time and you can continue after the six months and we want at least six months because you've got to have it to start building some stamina around some of the leadership foundations that you need. And so we are coming together monthly and we have an awesome opportunity to answer Q and A. And so we've been doing that and I had a first time leader submit a Q and A and we answered it. And so that's part of their coursework. We're reaching out to 'em a couple of times a week reminding them to get in there and learn video lessons, do assignments, work with each other, stretch assignments that really get them to practice some of the skills that we're growing.
And so this is a terrific program for anyone who is new to leadership or has jumped into a position, hasn't had any formal leadership training, or they've been in a leadership position for a while. This is so much of heavy equipment and they've not had formal training yet. So this is a great opportunity and we have a variety of people in place. We've got people in finance, people in sales, people in parts, people in service. And so, you know, one day you're a field technician and the next day you are calling the shots for eight other guys that were your coworkers the day before. That's a scary thing. So how do we do that? And how do we manage?
So we've got this Q and A process as part of our course. So we're banking these really interesting questions that our participants keep coming up with. And one of them that they came up with was "how do I motivate someone to have more drive?". And so I thought I'd answer that one here as a part of - as we talk about SPARK because you might have somebody that's brand new that needs some support and needs some help, and they can jump onto a live meeting with me every month and get some personal support as we are meeting, just like I'm talking to you now.
So, how do we motivate someone to have more drive?
Well, the simple answer is that we can't, right? Motivation is an inside job. Motivation is I have to feel motivated to go do something. Now, I know a lot of people will comment to some of our posts, that you know, this new working generation, these people, they don't care. They just wanna be told what to do. Well, a lot of it is around motivation. Now, what motivates somebody is if you know what they care about, value, and what matters to them, that is their motivator. But here's the deal. You've got to get to know them to learn what those things are. So if you wanna motivate someone, you gotta get a relationship with that person. And that doesn't mean that you just say, "Hey, how was your weekend?", and then go into operation mode. You gotta kind of get to know them. And so in our business where it's mostly guys reporting to guys, that's hard, right? And we know you care. We know you care deeply and we know you're there to get a job done. So some of it is motivation is an inside job. I motivate myself, but you incentivize me, so you pay me. Well that is, of course, you're going to pay me, right? So my paycheck is not really a motivator. If you tell me that what I'm doing connects to something greater that motivates me. If you tell me that we're going to beat the competition, that could be a motivator for me. If you let me know that what I did made a difference, that could be a motivator for me. So a lot of these things they vary. What motivates one person is going to be quite different from another. And so then that's where we start talking about personality styles. And so we cover a lot of this kind of thing in SPARK where we're trying to figure out how do I help my employees motivate themselves? So they want to do a good job if you want to have this kind of interaction, or you have an employee that needs to know some of the basics around how to interact more effectively with your employees, how to be in charge, how to get the job done with other people doing the work and you managing them to do it. How do we manage for outcome and how do we get behavior change when we need it?
